We have more than ten years' experience conducting energy audits at more than 350 sites across the UK and Europe, covering nearly every building type imaginable.

An energy audit / survey is a process where an auditor comes to your site(s) and analyses all energy use to understand the opportunities available to reduce consumption and emissions.

Energy audits are tailored, site-specific surveys, and are often considered the first essential step to fully understanding how to decarbonise a building as part of a wider decarbonisation plan.

After the audit, we will provide a series of costed recommendations with an indication of return on investment (ROI) timescales and implementation advice.

The output will be tailored to your requirements, which can range from concise advice to detailed technical reports.

Our chartered energy auditors have experience with the following types of energy audit:

• Complex manufacturing sites
• Educational establishments (schools/universities)
• Farming and food processing
• Leisure & sports (e.g. swimming pools)
• Retail establishments
• Restaurants/catering
• Warehouses
• Depots (e.g. bus & train maintenance depots)
• Offices
• Car/van fleets
• Hotels & accommodation
• Transport logistics/planning (e.g. large lorry fleets)

We will tailor our recommendations to any building type, regardless of age or condition.

There are three main types of energy audit we are able to undertake:

1. Building energy audits - providing guidance for reducing energy use & emissions in all types of buildings
2. Process energy audits - providing guidance for reducing energy use & emissions in commercial & industrial processes (e.g. manufacturing)
3. Transport energy audits - providing guidance for reducing energy use & emissions of commercial fleet transport (e.g. cars, vans, lorries, etc.)

There are two standards we work to for energy auditing:

• BS EN 16247 (2022) (generally used in UK-based projects)
• ISO 50002 (2014) (used across the world)

The standards set out a minimum criteria for undertaking an energy audit, which we follow closely. The two standards cover similar approaches and can be used interchangeably depending on each project's requirements.

In 2019, AfZ director Chris was involved in producing a training course for the Institute of Engineering and Technology to train people to use the BS EN 16247 energy audit standard.
